An app that knows when your food is expiring
Is there any sadder sight than a half-full tub of yogurt that has reached its expiration date? How about a head of lettuce that has exceeded its expiration date and is now semi-gelatinous at the bottom of your crisper? If this hits close to home, you might want to consider Fridge Pal, a new app that helps you keep track of (and use) the food you’ve bought.

Here’s how it works: When you’re at the grocery store, use the app to scan the barcodes on the food in your cart. Fridge Pal will then add those items to a virtual fridge, freezer or pantry so you can see at a glance what you have in the house. (You can also manually add foods that don’t have barcodes.)

Next to each virtual item, you’ll see its use-by date, and the app will send you reminders when food is about to go bad. In other words, you’ll get a kick in the pants to eat that expensive Icelandic cheese.

In addition to helping you cut down on waste, Fridge Pal is great for making shopping lists and finding recipes based on ingredients you have on hand. Plus, it all but eliminates the whole “Oh, I didn’t know we had cumin–I just bought a new one” predicament.
